an.

Unterkunft:

• The Inn on Stephens Bay: Das B&B wird von einem kanadischen

Ehepaar betrieben.

im Schlafzimmer und Bad auf das Meer ist atemberaubend;

Kanadafieber – Die Kanada Spezialisten - Karl-Hans Kern, Lampertheim, Germany

German Magazine Article about the Oceanfront Inn on Stephens Bay

Hearing the Whales Breathe  (English Version) - Karl-Hans Kern, Lampertheim, Germany

The final stop on our trip this year was Coal Harbour on Holberg Inlet. We stayed in a vacation apartment with a fantastic view of the sea. Our two hosts, a couple about our age, made our stay an unforgettable experience. In his younger years, he had been a chef for the Canadian Olympic team and for renowned hotels in the United States and later in Nanaimo — something we had the pleasure of experiencing almost daily.

Freshly caught crab and shrimp, soufflés, and freshly picked berries appeared on our table from time to time. We had actually planned to use the last few days of our trip to lose some of the extra pounds we had gained. That, however, didn’t happen — even though we were active.

After all, what could be more tempting than setting out on the sea when kayaks are available for free at any time, and you’ve heard stories that whales might suddenly appear, or that black bears might be spotted along the shore? Naturally, we went paddling along the coastline. It was good that there were single kayaks as well, because my wife wasn’t about to trade the warmth of bed for the chill of morning fog or a light breeze at seven o’clock. So it was left to me to experience those unique moments in nature.

No, I didn’t meet a whale while kayaking — but I did encounter a mother bear with her two cubs. They were ambling leisurely along the shore, searching for mussels and other edibles. Since we assumed the bears would also be out and about in the late afternoon, we set out together on the water later that day. We were lucky: almost at the same spot, the bear family appeared again, and we were able to watch them for several minutes from a safe distance.

Another goosebump-inducing adventure came the next evening — in the dark. During the day, we had seen two humpback whales breathing on the opposite side of the inlet. When night fell and the sounds of laughing children and our neighbors’ Thanksgiving celebration faded into the distance, a solemn stillness settled over the shore. And then we heard them — the whales. They breathed, and it sounded as if the giants of the sea were resting right in front of us. My neighbor had seen my flashlight and whispered, “Do you hear them?” I was nearly moved to tears. That sound — I will never forget it.

On one of the sunny days, we decided to drive to Port McNeill and take the ferry to Malcolm Island. The drive through the island’s lush green forests is an experience in itself, but the ferry ride tops it all. The crossing to Sointula takes just under half an hour. As soon as the ferry docks, you feel the island’s distinctive calm and ease. People greet one another, the few cars drive slowly, pedestrians always have the right of way, and many house fronts reveal artistically inclined residents.

We decided to visit Bere Point Regional Park on the north side of the island. After a six-kilometre gravel road, we reached a beautifully situated park complete with campground. The view immediately falls upon the coastal mountain range and its snow-covered peaks. A wide stretch of sand and pebble beach runs along the island, with small trails leading to the campground.

Each campsite is artfully decorated and outlined with driftwood in shades of grey and white. Painted stones form game boards, placed out for visitors to use. The wind blows strongly from the sea, whipping up leaves and sending foam rolling across the shore. If we ever travel through this region again with a motorhome, this campground will certainly be one of our stops.

Saying goodbye to Michelle and Stephen, our hosts, was difficult. Once more, Stephen cooked for us — almost in traditional German style: red cabbage, dumplings, and turkey in gravy. The four of us agreed that, while this might mark the end of our vacation, it was surely the beginning of a friendship that would reach across continents.

At six o’clock in the morning, we left Coal Harbour for Duke Point Ferry Terminal. We had booked the ferry to Tsawwassen in advance, allowing us to wait for departure in peace. The crossing was calm, and both of us were rather quiet. Each was lost in thought, beginning to prepare for the return home.

Home? Over these six weeks, the places and people of Canada had come to feel almost like a second home. We are certain: if we stay healthy and life allows it, we will return to our land of longing — British Columbia.

THE INN IN STEPHENS BAY has been fortunate to have hosted many wonderful guests from around the world and even from just a few miles away.  Our guests have enjoyed kayaking on our beautiful bay, relaxing in serenity and tranquility of the peacefulness and, well, we will let you read what a few of our guests have said themselves......

...We enjoyed our little getaway so much that we took a second trip this fall driving north on Vancouver Island to Port Hardy.  In nearby Coal Harbour we found the most exquisite B&B.  The Inn on Stephens Bay where we were treated in incredible breakfasts and steamed crab as snacks.....  Margriet Ruurs, Aqua Magazine.  November/December 2021

Really enjoyed every minute of my Stay. Michelle and Steven are great owners. Ask Steven about his Fawlty towers experience: brilliant. The Chef knows his eggs. Super breakfast. Quitiest room ever with best view and super bed. Would definitely come back. Excellent base for whale watching in the area which I did with great results. ( D.J. - The Netherlands)

Very friendly welcome. The apartment is very well equipped, very clean and the location fantastic (overlooking the bay). Every morning we received a fresh and lovingly prepared breakfast in the host's home. The hosts were very attentive and very friendly. Everything was very well maintained. Parking directly at the house. On our 4 week trip through Canada this was the nicest place for us. Thanks again to the hosts. (Ursula – Germany)

Michelle  was an AMAZING host.  She made our stay very enjoyable! Most beautiful place right on the water.  Loved every second of  my stay.  Only regret was that I didn't stay longer!!  Her positive, caring, and kind personality is what really made staying here ...a one of kind experience.  (Lori - Ontario, Canada)

The Inn on Stephens Bay is a fantastic quiet retreat away from the crowds.  The Suite/apartment is very private and has it all.  The views are amazing.  Kayaking (provided) on the sound is like a dram.  Wide views, tranquility and several seals around.  Michelle and Stephan are super hosts, service minded with a super friendly touch.  The breakfast is home cooked and delightful.  It was hard to leave. If it would be possible we would give these hosts 6 out of 5.  (Jack - The Netherlands)

The Inn on Stephens Bay is a true gem.  We stayed here prior to tackling the Cape Scott Trail. The property is absolutely beautiful with an outstanding view.  The suite was beautiful, spacious and incredibly clean.  Michelle was friendly and welcoming.  To top it off, the breakfast - fresh fruit, a granola parfait and french toast with a blackberry coulis made of berries picked fresh from the property - far exceeded our expections.  Would definitely recommend staying here if you're in the area! (Christoph - Victoria, B.C.)

Both Michelle and Stephen were excellent hosts. Breakfast was fantastic on all 3 mornings and nothing was too much trouble. The loan of the kayaks was greatly appreciated together with their knowledge of the area. This was a fantastic stay.  (Paul- GB)

Amazing view from the window! We saw a black bear on the beach, deer on the property and a sea otter in the water. Michelle is a wonderful host with eye for detail and the breakfast was delicious. Highly recommended if you wish to relax and wish to have a spectaculair view! We will be back one day. Thank you Michelle and Stephen!  (Celeeste - NL)

Superb breakfasts, beautiful sea views from our bed, remote location. Thank you Michelle and Stephen . (Anthony - GB)

Michelle and her husband have created the ideal place to relax in the inconspicuous Coal Harbour. Their house is furnished with incredible love, the breakfast is outstanding and the location with a view of the bay breathtaking. With a little luck you can watch bears, seals and even whales from the windows. We even had the luck to be allowed to use the kayaks of the hosts, got super equipment and tips for excursion destinations. We would come back at any time.  (Stephanie - DE)

Super beautiful and hospitable, you can use free kayaks.  The B&B is in a very nice spot. We were sorry that after 2 nights we went through again Had to get the boat. The owners will do everything in their power to make it enjoyable. During kayaking we saw seals, orcas and a bear but that's natural luck. A must. (Hans - DE)

The most wonderful place. The view is stunning. Also the room was magnificent. Michelle and Stephen are the most adorable hosts. The breakfast is just magnificent.  (Tonia and Marc - BE)

Location unmatched. Fantastic view of the bay. Beautiful well-kept house with a wonderful garden. Pure relaxation in paradise surroundings. Well-kept rooms, everything was very clean. Very warm and helpful hosts. Delicious breakfast prepared with love. It couldn't be better.  (Ursula - CE)

The breakfast was amazing, Stephen is a professional chef and every morning had a new breakfast creation. Both Michelle and Stephen went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Including giving us a ride to work and in to town when our car broke down!   (Melody  - CA)

Best breakfast on Planet Earth. The view of the bay is not to be worded. The friendliness and helpfulness of the hosts are unique. We have never felt as welcome as we have stayed in this accommodation. Also, the location is perfect for exploring the area by car, hiking or kayaking. An absolute must for any fan of the combination 'experience nature' and 'forget everything around you'.  (Daniel - DE)

This accommodation is definitely recommendable. The hosts are very nice and helpful. We were able to extend the stay without any problems. In addition, we rented a paddle boat from our hosts and explored the fjord. A great experience.  (Helmut  - DE)

This is not the usual inn, but a small corner of paradise. The room and the rest of the property are beautifully and thoroughly decorated and everything is sparkling clean. Because of the ever-changing faces of the ocean, the window becomes truly a framework you cannot take the eyes of. For urban people like us, the quietness of the place and the stillness of the surrounding nature were overwhelming. But above all, this place is amazing because of the people who own it: Stephen and Michelle are amazing hosts. They bring a soul to the amazing landscape. Breakfast. And this is not the usual breakfast either. Yes, there are eggs, and bread, and yoghurt, and fruits. But in addition, there is a lot of human kindness that changes everything. Needless to add that we highly recommend Stephens Bay Inn and hope to be back one day. (Monica - CA)

Beautiful location ... gorgeous view.. amazing space ... Excellent hospitality from our hosts who went out of their way to make our stay special ... we loved it so much wished we had of booked for longer ... awesome breakfast ... went kayaking -( kayaks provided) around cove and saw bears ... very special ....  We only stayed here the one night, however we wish that we could have stayed longer. The house is absolutely immaculate, stunning location, extremely nice and welcoming hosts, and the breakfast was first class.  (Peniby - CA)

We received a very nice reception from Michelle when we arrived. Our room was spotless. We had a wonderful view out to the bay. Met the other guests and had a nice chat with them. Outstanding breakfast. For what we got the price was quite reasonable. (Lloyd - CA)

Michelle is a real gem! Polite and accommodating. We stayed for five nights and each morning breakfast was delicious and never the same. Our room was clean and quiet. Perfect for my husband’s rehabilitation. If you are looking for R&R this is the place!  (Jan - CA)

This place was the highlight of my trip! The room is actually better than the photos, and Michelle and Steven are the rare type of host that put their hearts as well as their skills into their hosting. The breakfasts are just as good if not better than the photos suggest. Coal Harbour is tiny and quiet and superb for getting away from it all. I cannot recommend it highly enough.  (Anna - US)

Best we have ever had in Canada. Breakfast best ever. The hosts were great The view from the room over the water and forest on the other side is beautiful. (Poul - DE)
